The art project tackling Thailand's social stigma through painted buffaloes

Maitree Siriboon, 33, is a Thai artist best known for his contemporary photography that merges elements of local countryside life with cosmopolitan concepts like fashion and sex. His latest project, dubbed Save Thai Buffalo and New Mosaic Series uses rescued buffaloes as the subject on which he paints replica works by famous artists, ranging from Picasso to Warhol, in an attempt to reverse social stigma around the animals. Here, we speak to him about the inspiration for the project, which opens this Saturday, Jun 9, at Yenakart Villa (69 Soi Prasat Suk, Yen Akat Rd, 02-235-9800) and runs through Aug 15.
