The Thai national team will be desperate to ensure their wonderfully spirited performance against Australia wasn't for nothing, when they take on Oman in their second World Cup Qualifier tonight. Last Friday, the Elephants did their country credit with a battling 2-1 loss away to the Socceroos in Brisbane. Thailand even managed to take a shock lead in the 15th minute, courtesy of Muangthong striker Teerasil Dangda, but despite some heroic defending, were unable to hold on. Josh Kennedy drew the out-of-sorts Australian's level in the 58th minute before Striker Alex Brosque broke Thai hearts with the 86th minute winner.
The defeat means the Thai team really need a win from tonight's game against Oman if they have any hope of qualifying for the next round of the World Cup. While Thailand were losing to Australia, Oman were playing out a goalless draw with the other team in the group, Saudi Arabia. Thailand have faced their opponents in World Cup Qualifying before, losing both games back in 2008, but last week's well-organized and resolute team effort suggests German coach Winnie Schafer's tactics are already making a difference. If any further motivation were needed then Thai FA President Worawi Makudi has also promised a B2 million bonus if the team manage a win.
You can cheer on the Elephants in person, with the game kicking off at 6pm tonight at Rajamangala stadium (tickets B100). If, like many we're sure, you can't get out of work that early then you can at least follow the action live on NBT Channel 11.
