The FA and League Cup dominated this weeks headlines as the TPL mid-season break continues.
League Cup Round-up
Thai Port came from a goal down to beat TOT 3-1 in the Toyota League Cup on Wednesday evening. Exciting young prospect Ekkapoom Potharungroj scored twice to help his side through to the last 16 as they seek to retain the trophy they won in 2010. Muangthong United comfortably saw off the challenge of Samut Prakan Customs at the Yamaha Stadium as they ran out 4-1 victors, with Nattaporn Phanrit opening the scoring for the Twin Qilins. And Police United won the Pathum Thani derby at the Leo Stadium as they defeated neighbours Bangkok Glass 3-1. Elsewhere for the Bangkok clubs, BEC Tero Sasana were taken to penalties by TTM Phichit but came through 4-1 in the shootout. Bangkok FC of Division 1 took TPL side Sisaket to extra time but were edged out 2-1. BBCU also lost 2-1 in extra time; the Pink Panthers exiting the competition away at FC Phuket. There was a predictable ‘shock’ at Kasetsart University as Thai Honda – second from bottom in Division 1 – went down 3-2 to a KU side currently top of the Bangkok Division of the Regional League. And tiny Globlex FC, also of the Bangkok Division, took struggling Division 1 giants Chiang Mai FC to extra time at Ramkamheng University, but the northerners ended up scraping through 1-0.
FA Cup 3rd Round Draw
Thai Port v Bangkok Glass is perhaps the pick of the fixtures involving Bangkok clubs after the 3rd round draw was made this week. Port won the FA Cup in 2009 and many are saying that BG are looking like a cup team this season. A fascinating encounter could be on the cards. Army United host Sasom Pobpraserd’s Buriram FC, and TOT are also at home as FC Phuket visit the capital. BEC Tero have a potential ‘banana skin’ fixture away at Rayong FC of the Regional League. There’s an all TPL clash in Saraburi as Osotspa host Police United, and Muangthong United, having disposed of Samut Prakan Customs in the League Cup now host Samut Prakan FC in the FA Cup. Dates have yet to be announced but all fixtures will be played during the mid-season break before the TPL resumes on July 30th.
