BANGKOK BAR

To More

A cross between an 18th-century theater and a '40s jazz club on Charoenkrung.

The buzz: Charoenkrung has been on the constant rise these past few years. Now that this new boutique cocktail bar has filled the old home of Soulbar (now on Silom), we reckon there’s no place in town that makes for better bar-hopping (see the 'hood's best bars here).

The decor: Looking in from the outside, moody lights combined with thick, red curtains will pique your curiosity. On entering, you’ll feel like you’ve just walked into something between an 18th-century theater and a '40s jazz club. The narrow area around the wooden bar packs in vintage-look tables and stools beneath dim bauble lighting.

The drinks: Amping up the theater theme further, the signature cocktails are inspired by plays. Miss Saigon (B320) is perfect for those who prefer a lighter drink with its mix of gin, elderflower, thyme, and olfactory lemongrass with a soft foamy texture from egg white. If that's too tame for you, step it up with Phantom of the Opera (B320), a tequila-based concoction with super-spicy Thai chilli and jalapeno, rimmed with paprika powder. Rum drinkers should choose The King and I (B280), a mix of dark rum, Angostura bitters and coconut.

The music: Live full-band jazz performances pack out the venue every Friday and Saturday. The rest of the week, you'll find a DJ spinning '60s-'70s jazz, jazzy hip-hop and swing.

The crowd: Young professionals looking for a place to wind down after work, especially those who work in Sathorn—very convenient to get to.

Why we’d come back: Charoenkrung keeps providing us with a steady flow of new, fun openings and this one doesn't disappoint.
