BANGKOK BAR

Overseoul

Sanam Pao's edgy bar dedicated to all things Korean.

The buzz: Bangkok has long been obsessed with Korean pop culture, so it’s about time for our nightlife to catch up. This Korean bar brings a whole new level of drinking to the very local, residential area of Sanam Pao, transporting you to Seoul on a budget BTS fare.

The decor: Hidden on the third floor of an old, industrial building right next to BTS Sanam Pao—you’d never expect there to be a bar up here. Bare concrete walls give the whole place a raw vibe that offsets the cheesy Korean pop music played in the background. As tipsiness sets in, the flashing blue and red lights add to the effect.

The drinks: Easy-drinking Korean tipples add to the fantasy that you’re on vacation. Try the Itewon (B261), a special blend of liquor and fresh fruits that is determined by what they have in stock and what could be found on the market that day. Another delight is the makgeoli, Korea’s answer to Thai sato. This milky, slightly fizzy rice wine comes in several flavors from original (B321) to banana (B351) and peach (B351).

The food: Unlike the Korean fusion food of Thonglor’s Sulbkk, this spot keeps it traditional and twist-free. Think dishes like tteok-bokki (stir-fried rice cakes, B181), pork jab chae (stir-fried glass noodles, B231) and a school canteen lunch box (B221) that comes with pork in Korean sweet and spicy sauce, topped with egg.

The music: You guessed it—K-Pop sounds from Twice, Wannaone, Momoland and Black Pink through to Red Velvet.

The crowd: If you have Korean fever, this is definitely the closest you’ll get to Seoul with your feet on Bangkok soil.

Why we’d come back: This place adds something new and different to the Bangkok drinking scene—perfect for when you’re getting bored with the usual suspects.
