BANGKOK BAR
Konkord
Sugar Ray and Tropic City's founders have teamed up for this intimate cocktail club.
The buzz: Currently in soft opening, with a grand opening scheduled for mid-Feb, this intimate cocktail bar and club comes from the founders of Tropic City and Sitthan “Turk” Sa-Nguankun (behind Sugar Ray, Q&A, Thaipioka, Sugarray Apartment, Alonetogether).
The vibe: Low ceilings, dark-colored furnishings and a compact dancefloor combine for an intimate space that’s made for late nights. A dripping pink-and-blue neon Saturn lights up the DJ booth, while a glowing Konkord sign bathes the padded burgundy banquettes in red light. On one side, a terrarium of leafy plants sits behind a glass window, creating a moody jungle feel. A terrace at the front loking over Soi 11 provides a prime perch for people-watching.
The drinks: Cocktails take a more straightforward approach than the tropical creations of Tropic City, with “three-ingredient” concoctions like the refreshing yet strangely festive Young Folk (Jameson whiskey, pre-made spiced apple cordial and soda; B330) and the easy-drinking Fashion Killa (Beefeater gin, spiced rhubarb compote and lemon; B330). They do nod to their roots, however, in the well-balanced Spottieottiedopaliscious (B350), a fruity combo of vanilla-infused vodka, crème de peche, mint, honey, pineapple and lemon. If you’re trying to get on it, go straight in for the Poetic Justice (B390), a potent, licorice-laced mix of caramelized pear-infused Jameson whiskey, pear eau de vie, absinthe, raspberry cordial and chocolate bitters. Not a cocktail drinker? Wine is available (from B330/glass or B1,650/bottle), along with Budweiser (B160).
The music: If you hadn’t guessed, the cocktails are all named after songs—a nod to the fact that the bar aims to be more about music than drinks. Expect to hear non-commercial cosmic electronic beats, with the odd hip hop night thrown in for good measure.
Why we’d come back: With plans to attract big name DJs for intimate selector sets and yet more plans to turn the front of the bar into a coffee-and-cocktails hangout (open from late afternoon), this spot is poised to make Soi 11 cool again.
