BANGKOK BAR

Q&A

Hidden inside a little alley, this speakeasy-style bar comes courtesy of the local cocktail specialists behind many of the best drink menus in town.

The buzz: Hidden inside a little alley, this speakeasy-style bar comes courtesy of the local cocktail specialists behind many of the best drink menus in town. It succeeds where many others fail to conjure the feeling of a secret drinking society.

The decor: The long, narrow space replicates a classic railway carriage dining car with a ‘20s New York vibe. Just 10 leather-upholstered seats are lined up along the deeply polished bar, where the barman specializes in personalized drinks.

The music: The interesting playlist jumps between soul, funk and Afro-Cuban jazz.

The drinks: There’s no food here, so you can focus solely on your drink. Chat to the barman about your favorite spirits and he’ll pour something to match, or choose from a list of 10 signature cocktails available during the soft opening. The owners say eventually they will offer a menu of up to 100 signature drinks. For now, they keep things classic with a few twists, including the innovative use of uncommon ingredients, as well as infusions and smoke. The Rough Negroni (B390), made from homemade gin, carries a strong hint of pine wood and citrus even though there's no orange peel for garnish, while the Comte De Monte Cristo (B420) has an interesting nutty aroma, based on port wine infused with Ethiopian coffee and toasted pecan, mixed with Amaro Montenegro and Diplomatico Exclusiva 12 Year Old rum.
