Buriram sealed the double with a well-deserved, but hard fought, win over Muangthong thanks to an extra time goal by Ghanian striker Frank Acheampong. In fact, an enthralling game needed extra time to decide who the watching PM Yingluck Shinawatra would be awarding the cup. That the 90 minutes ended goalless was really down to some great goalkeeping by Muangthong’s Kawin Thammasatchanan and some woeful finishing by both sides.
It was fitting that it was Buriram’s two star performers of the season, Acheampong and Franck Ohandza who combined to seal the win for Buriram in the 108th minute. Ohandza’s neat backheeled through ball sent Acheampong into the box where his rocket finish cannoned in off the underside of the bar. It was really the least that PEA deserved as they took increasing control as the game wore on thanks to the pace and intelligent running of Acheampong and Ohandza upfront and the probing passing of their well-drilled midfield.
In fact, it was mostly down to the heroics of Kirin keeper Nawin, who pulled off one wonder save to deny Ohandza in the second-half, that the game even made it to extra time. Muangthong will also rue missing some good chances of their own in a first 45 minutes that they just about shaded. The most gilt edged of those chances was a terrible miss by an unmarked Teerasil Dangda from six yards after some good work by player-coach Robbie Fowler.
The Kirins will of course point to injuries and the fact that they had already had to play 120 minutes in their semi-final three days before, but the defeat means they end the season empty handed, a big blow after consecutive league titles. Buriram meanwhile can look forward to a return to the Supalchasai Stadium in a couple of weeks when they aim for an amazing treble if they can overcome another Bangkok club, Thai Port in the League Cup Final on February 4th.
It would be a remarkable achievement for a club that their infamous chairman and former politician Newin Chidchob took over just two years ago. The architect (and financial backer) for Buriram's success was on hand to witness the win in front of a vociferous Thunder Dome crowd who turned up in big numbers despite the midweek kick off. They are sure to be back in even greater force for the League Cup final, which takes place on a Saturday and you’d be hard pressed to see past Buriram and Newin adding to their trophy cabinet.
