So as we predicted it’s going to be a Muangthong v Buriram final in the FA Cup this Wednesday night but the Kirins certainly made heavy weather of getting there. While Buriram cruised to an easy 2-0 win over Army United, courtesy of first half goals from Suchao Nutnum and Frank Acheampong, Muangthong had to rely on penalties to get past Division one side Songkhla FC. The Fighting Bulls prove there’s some truth to their nickname scoring first before Muangthong’s player/coach Robbie Fowler got the Kirins level. Muangthong went ahead in the second half only for Songkhla to equalize. There were no further goals in extra time which meant penalties with the TPL team eventually winning 6-5.
That means the TPL’s two heavyweights in terms of their financial clout will face each other in the final which is due to take place this Wednesday at 6pm at Supachalasai Stadium. After a rather indifferent season that sees last year’s champions set to finish third in the league Muanthong will be desperate for some silverware. Meanwhile the new champions Buriram are still eying the treble, as they have also made it to the League Cup Final where they’ll take on another Bangkok team in Thai Port on Feb 4 also at Supachalasai Stadium on February 4th at 5pm.
Meanwhile, in the Premier League TOT are still deeply mired in the relegation quagmire after they could only draw 1-1 with Insee Police United. They know sit third from bottom one point behind Navy and SCG with two games to play. There was better news for Bangkok Glass who made sure of fourth spot with a convincing 2-0 win at home to Si Sa Ket. Thai Port ended their premier campaign with a draw, 1-1 away to the already relegated Khon Kaen, and now look forward to the cup final, while in the other match Osotspa M-150 Saraburi beat TTM Phichit 3-0.
