Just a day after he took over the reins as coach of Muangthong United, Robbie Fowler saw his team get off to a winning start with a comfortable 3-1 win away against SCG Samut Songkhram. The former Liverpool legend was appointed caretaker coach after the departure of previous manager Henrique Calisto. He played all 90 minutes as Muangthong moved up to second thanks to goals from Dagno Siaka, Teerasil Dangda and Nataporn Phanrit.

They now lie nine behind Buriram who played the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Chonburi on Friday night. The Thunder Dome were leading 1-0 from the first game but lost this enthralling and ill-tempered encounter 3-2 only scraping through on the away goals rule. Buriram opened the scoring early through Suchao Nutnum. The Sharks hit back to tie the leg, only for their defender Kenneth Akpueze to get sent off a minute later. Buriram’s Frank Acheampong went down claiming he had been elbowed by Akpueze, but subsequent replays show that the Nigerian striker wasn’t touched.

The Sharks still managed to rally back with two goals from Pipob On-mo but a 70 minute goal from Buriram’s other Frank, Franck Ohandza ended up being crucial. Buriram’s win means they will face the current cup holders Thai Port in a rematch of last year’s final. The game takes place on Oct 15 and will be played at Supachalasai stadium.

Back in the TPL, Bangkok Glass keep up their push for a top four spot with a 1-0 away at lowly Siam Navy who now have a real relegation fight on their hands. Two second half goals were enough to ensure Police United continued their strong recent form with a good away win at BEC Tero whose season is tailing off fast. Buriram’s rivals in the League Cup Final Thai Port recorded their third straight defeat losing 2-0 to TTM Phichit, while Army United pulled off a much needed 1-0 win over TOT. Outside the Bangkok clubs Chiangrai and Khonkaen played out a 1-1 draw and Sriracha lost at home 1-0 to Pattaya United.
