As the transfer window looks set to swing shut, it is looking likely that one big-name foreign signing will be arriving in the TPL. The club is Muangthong United and the player is former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler. Several reliable sources claim that the unattached 36-year-old Liverpudlian will sign a four-month pay-as-you-play contract. Muangthong have recently got their hands burnt with foreign players Berkant Göktan and Toni Kallio but appear willing to risk losing face again for the chance of landing another big-name, big-money signing. If MTU do pull the deal off, it will certainly make a lot of headlines and, thanks to the Liverpool links, will certainly give their attendances and merchandise sales a boost. On the other hand, critics will suggest Fowler’s signing is a short-term publicity stunt, that will add more fuel to the debate over the number of foreign players in the TPL and whether they are being signed for the right reasons. Fowler was an undoubted talent and a goalscoring legend with an incredible eye for the back of the net at Liverpool but is obviously approaching the end of his career and is fresh from a mixed spell playing in the Australian A-League. Fowler is expected to fly to Thailand today (Thursday) and sign tomorrow – just before the transfer window for signing foreign players closes on Friday night. We will of course keep you updated with any developments.
