Both Thai participants exited the AFC Cup this week, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. Muangthong United, who lost 1-0 despite dominating the first leg of their quarter-final against Kuwait SC, were hopeful that they could turn the tie around at the Yamaha Stadium on Tuesday night. The Qilins were generally the better side again, though they struggled to create many good chances as the Kuwaitis put in a solid defensive display. The main talking point came in injury-time as the referee initially awarded a penalty to Muangthong only to change his mind after talking to the linesman. The match finished 0-0 on the night which sees the current TPL champions go out 0-1 on aggregate.
In the other match featuring a Thai team, Chonburi did far better than expected in Uzbekistan against Nasaf. The Sharks were trailing 1-0 after the first leg in Chonburi, and most pundits wouldn’t have given them a chance so far from home in such a hostile environment – particularly as Nasaf outplayed Chonburi first time round. Again, Nasaf proved strong, but it was Chonburi who took the lead early in the second half thanks to Ney Fabiano. They managed to hold onto that advantage to take their hosts all the way to a penalty shootout only to agonizingly fall just short as Nasaf won the spot kick contest 4-3.
