TRAT HOTEL

Koh Mak Cinnamon Resort

Buzz: A police major general has spent more than two years turning his family’s patch of lush forest into a hideaway retreat. Both private and luxurious, the place offers inclusive packages that tend to all your needs, from food to adventure.

The design: The resort’s 26 bungalows, all designed by the same architect as Aana Resort on Koh Chang, are carved from local wood and roofed with shingle tiles. The bungalows sit around a semi-circular infinity pool, overlooking the sea. Each room has its own terrace, pantry, large dressing area and bathroom. There’s even a duplex clubhouse, which reminds us of a spacious lakeside log cabin. They are building 22 more rooms, which should be completed this November.

The good: The resort’s only restaurant sits right by their pier and serves surpisingly good Thai food with lots of seafood specialties. Though they look petite from the outside, the bungalows are in fact very spacious. The location is perfect for those looking to leave the world behind. Get a cushioned seat at the clubhouse’s outdoor terrace for a perfect afternoon session of chilling out. The local staff are not exactly slick and professional but are very kind and attentive.

The bad: Too bad the resort doesn’t have its own private beach. And as the resort is hugged by lush forest, there are lots of mosquitoes. Check the weather before you travel during monsoon season, as there’s not much to do when it rains.

Prices: The resort only offers all-inclusive full-board packages for three days and two nights, featuring six meals, island day trips with snorkeling opportunities, and roundtrip speedboat transfers from Trat. Rates are from B6,900 per person for a double occupancy basis. B5,000 each is charged for addtional guests in the same room. Top Koaysomboon
