HUA HIN DESTINATION_ARTICLE

Coastal Culture

From cutesty crafts to high-brow art, Hua Hin flexes its creative muscles.

Not all artists escape to Chiang Mai. And Hua Hin’s culture isn’t limited to jazz concerts and faux-vintage markets like Plern Wan. Here, we round up a few places with a resolutely creative—even arty—edge.

Baan Sillapin

81 Moo 14 Hua Hin bypass, Khao Hin Lek Fai. Open Tue-Sun 10am-5pm, 032-534-830, 087-167-3895. www.baansillapinhuahin.com
This village, situated on the hillside of Khao Hin Lek Fai, has been home to a group of artists for 15 years. Led by watercolor artist Tawee Kesa-ngam, the community allows for its 19 members to create their masterpieces in a welcoming, art-friendly environment. You can also experience this sanctuary through their fun art workshops for both adults and children. They offer everything from papier-mâché to making your own notebooks. Alternatively, just stick to their two-hour painting classes. Adult classes cost US$10 and are held every Tuesday and Thursday while it’s US$7 for kids, every Saturday. If you don’t feel creative, you can still come and enjoy a cup of coffee at their adorable café or browse their shop which sells antique décor items, cute handmade stuff and, of course, the artists’ work.

Cicada Market

Suan Sri Park, Nhongkae-Khao Takieb Rd., 032-536-606, 080-650-4334. Open Fri-Sat 4-11pm, Sun 4-10pm. www.cicadamarket.net
After a slow start, this trendy market in Hua Hin is picking up the pace and popularity, thanks to its funky selection of lovely handicrafts and chilled-out garden vibe. From furniture to fashion, as well as some quirky Hua Hin souvenirs, you can find it here. Even just sitting and snacking at the alfresco food court under the illuminated trees is a pleasurable experience. Music lovers should head here for bossanova on Friday and jazz on Sunday, while Saturdays currently see stand-up comedians take to the open-air stage.

Vic Hua Hin

If you’re worried about where to stay while you study, then you can check into their super cute Nai Dee Sculpture Huts which are set in quaint grounds filled with artwork. Rates range from US$50-US$83, but you also get free tickets to whatever is currently on at the theater if you stay on a Saturday night.
