The Moon
Mosque Street's all-in-one bookstore, cafe and events space
For a casual all-in-one space to do your reading, working and coffee-drinking, newly opened The Moon on Mosque Street is an attractive option. In a three-storey shophouse in Chinatown, the multi-concept lifestyle space combines a bookstore, cafe and event space that at its core practices inclusivity and collaboration.
Founded by a pair of entrepreneuring 20-somethings, The Moon was started as a safe space to include more diverse voices. The retail selection sets itself apart from other local independent bookstores with a greater selection of titles from female writers, independently published authors, and people of color. Local publications like longform print magazine Mynah Magazine are also stocked.
After you’ve picked out a refreshing new read, have a cuppa at the cozy cafe. Apart from the standard coffee selections ($4-$6, by Quarter Life Coffee Roasters), there are savory tea blends ($5 for a pot) like chamomile, blackforest, and peppermint blue pea; each comes with a narrative snippet to put you in the reading mood. And in line with its ethos of inclusivity, specialty drinks made to be dairy-free and dietary friendly are on the menu as well—like the turmeric latte Haldi Doodh ($6-$7), matcha lemonade ($6), and banana, oat, maple and blueberry smoothie ($7). Seasonal cakes are rotated with vegan and gluten-free options available too.
Upstairs, curl up on the cushy sofas in the twinkly-lit reading room, which turns into an events space for creatives and culture seekers to make their own. The only thing there’s no space for here is negativity.
