Wheeler's Yard
The buzz: Tucked away in a nondescript corner of Balestier, this newly-opened, ultra-cool bicycle atelier, workshop and cafe is, unsurprisingly, attracting hipsters in droves.
The vibe: The sprawling warehouse space is the epitome of industrial chic. With grungy concrete floors and the unfinished look, the focus really is on the bicycles, which also double up as the décor; colorful chassis and helmets are mounted on each wall to form creative art installations.
The goods: Both avid cyclists and casual riders will be sorely tempted by the wide selection of handmade urban bicycles ($1900 upwards) in an array of colors and sizes. Patrons can also have their own bicycles refurbished by the shop’s experienced mechanics. What’s more, there’s a curated range of imported vintage furniture ($100 upwards) for sale. A decent and affordable selection of burgers, hot dogs, pasta and sandwiches ($5.50 upwards) are on offer at the in-house canteen, which also serves up freshly brewed coffee ($4 upwards).
Why you’ll be back: Though not located in the most accessible of places, you’ll want to return again and again to feast your eyes on the gorgeous bikes on display.
