SINGAPORE RESTAURANT

Madame Patisserie

The casual eatery serves breakfast pastries such as croissants and cinnamon buns (from $4) as well as classic cakes including tiramisu and matcha azuki bean swiss rolls. The cafe has a great view of the river and the owner Sherie Quek—whose background is in hospitality and used to work at the Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore—has created a garden-like alfresco area, complete with a grass patch out front and green centrepieces on every table.

The buzz: Ex Ritz-Carlton pastry chef Sherie Quek has just launched this cute cafe at Boat Quay offering a stunning view of the river. The dessert specialist makes everything from scratch on-premises daily.

The vibe: Very femme, with lots of pink and adorable plant fixtures on each table. There’s also a charming alfresco area out front covered with faux grass—it’s quite the serene oasis in nightlife-centric Boat Quay.

The food: Lots of options for the sweet toothed. There are plated desserts prepared a la minute (think vanilla souffle ($16)). And their pretty refrigerator case  includes old school options like chocolate butter cake ($6.50) and pineapple upside down cake ($6.50) as well as lighter French-style confections such as the caramelized ivory mousse with groittine cherries ($4.50). Some savories are on offer too: There’s a cheese platter ($20) and cheese fondue ($30).

The drinks: Cleansing pots of Ronnefeldt tea ($9) in flavors like peppermint and rooibos vanilla, plus Papa Palheta coffee (from $4) and hot chocolate ($7). There’s also a range of Portuguese and Italian wines including Alambre Moscatel 2007 ($10/glass, $60/bottle).

Why you’ll be back: You’d be hard pressed to find another quiet, low key spot along this stretch of the river to indulge in primo dessert alongside some affordable, quality vino.

When the weather is good, eating outside can be a truly enjoyable dining experience. These joints with charming open air areas are just the place to dine on breezy evenings.
