SINGAPORE RESTAURANT

Kuro Maguro

A Japanese bluefin tuna wholsesaler opens a super fresh sashimi and donburi joint in Tanjong Pagar.

Japanese tuna wholesaler Misaki Megumi Suisan, also behind Eat at 7's Maguro Donya, has launched a casual but pretty donburi restaurant along the strip of Japanese eateries at the new Tanjong Pagar Centre. Kuro Maguro's whole thing is its ability to bypass markets like Tsukiji and bring fresh, affordable bluefin tuna straight from the trawler to the restaurant. Despite the lofty concept, the space is surprisingly cozy and casual. The long, narrow, high-ceilinged interior is dominated by the open kitchen, where you can watch super-fresh tuna being sliced up. The big draw on the menu is the 18 choices of generous donburi bowls. The most luxurious option the kiwami meshi ($42), which has various cuts of fatty tuna, uni, shrimp and other goodies atop a bed of Hokkaido rice.

The buzz: Japanese tuna wholesaler Misaki Megumi Suisan, also behind Eat at 7's Maguro Donya, has launched a casual but pretty donburi restaurant along the strip of Japanese eateries at the new Tanjong Pagar Centre. Kuro Maguro's whole thing is its ability to bypass markets like Tsukiji and bring fresh, affordable bluefin tuna straight from the trawler to the restaurant. (Is this sustainable, you ask? We did, too, and were told Misaki Megumi Suisan fishes in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, where the bluefin population is much healthier than in the Pacific, and never catch young tuna that haven't had a chance to spawn.)

The vibe: Despite the lofty concept, the space is surprisingly cozy and casual. The long, narrow, high-ceilinged interior is dominated by the open kitchen, where you can watch super-fresh tuna being sliced up. The obligatory, Japanese-inspired beige and white color scheme is a nice contrast to the lunchtime market-bustle, and the glassfront is great for CBD people-watching.

The food: Fear not, there is plenty else on the menu other than bluefin tuna. There's a small selection of fresh sashimi, too, and while various cuts and fattiness levels of tuna (chotoro, otoro, toro, et cetera) comprise the bulk of the list, there's also hotate (scallop, $24), amaebi (sweet shrimp, $12), aori ika (squid, $12) and more, not to mention sides like shrimp tempura and nasu wasabi. The big draw is the 18 choices of generous donburi bowls. The most luxurious option the kiwami meshi ($42), which has various cuts of fatty tuna, uni, shrimp and other goodies atop a bed of Hokkaido rice. Also delicious, and a bit lighter, is the toro taku meshi ($25.80), which features minced fatty tuna cut with grated yam and ikura. A few don also come in mini options, ranging from $10,80-18.80.

Why you'll be back: The prices are surprisingly affordable, especially given the portion size, with donburi starting at $17.80, and after all that hoopla, the fish is indeed, super fresh.
