SINGAPORE RESTAURANT

B@Rochester

The buzz: B@Rochester is a new contemporary Japanese restaurant and bar that opened just under a month ago at Rochester Park.

The vibe: It’s got quite a classic layout, with a sashimi counter set within the main 40-seater dining room, and modern, understated décor. There’s also the alfresco bar area for a quiet spot to down some sake after a long day.

The food: Aside from a selection of fresh sashimi standards like kampachi (amberjack, $20), mekajiki (swordfish, $16) and uni (sea urchin, $30), you can also expect to find less traditional dishes such as bonito broth with cubes of seafood and shimeji mushrooms, served with calamansi for an added zing ($12). Some of executive chef Joseph Chee’s signatures include pan-seared duck breast coupled with delicate slivers of Chinese snow pear ($20) and somen in lobster bisque crowned with langoustine ($28).

Why you’ll be back: For now, it’s still a quiet respite from the madness of the city and a welcome change to be surrounded by greenery.
