Issimo
Celebrity chef Salvatore Cuomo graces Shanghai with his culinary presence at Issimo, offering up regional Italian specialties in his signature style.
Opened: March 24, 2008
What: Boutique hotel Jia’s Italian restaurant. This isn’t close to being a staid hotel joint, though. A long rectangular lounge lifted from the pages of Wallpaper precedes the dining room; Salvatore Cuomo’s Italian empire has done the menu.
Look: The lounge is all sophisticated men’s club feel. Stuffy leather couches have be re-cast in a sleek, geometric mold, and high-design lamps glow with a dim light. The restaurant is a touch brighter, livened up with a long, marble counter, copper globe lights, and the original, curved windows of the 1920s neoclassical building.
Food: Meant to be shared for two or four people (though single diners haven’t been forgotten, just re-priced). On our visit, we split a wooden board of cured meats, including a nutty serrano ham, crusty bruschetta draped with a creamy white slice of pancetta, a thin-crusted pizza piled with rocket, parmesan, and parma, a grilled skewer of homemade sausage covered in melted provola, and a firm casarecce pasta with more pancetta, tomato, and pecorino.
People: Guests at the hotel are uniformly stylish. Diners follow suit.
Bill: ¥700-800 for two.
