The Coffee Academics
Hong Kong’s purveyor of specialty coffee arrives in Bangkok.
The buzz: Hong Kong’s renowned specialty coffee expert has landed in Bangkok, offering world-class brews made with premium beans sourced from across the planet. Founded in 2010 by entrepreneur Jennifer W.F. Liu, the popular coffee shop was featured in the 2017 Michelin Guide for specialty coffee and currently has 14 outlets worldwide.
The decor: Located at Langsuan’s high-end community mall, Velaa Sindhorn Village, the spacious cafe achieves a masculine aesthetic through a combination of dark tiles and gleaming metal accents. The bar, all decked out in black mosaic tiles (a nod to Hong Kong’s subway), is hands-down the most Instagram-worthy spot. Behind it you’ll find a charcoal concrete accent wall branded with the cafe’s bright, geometric logo, which is inspired by the chemical structure of caffeine. Elsewhere, warm wood fixtures, tanned leather stools and indoor plants help keep the vibe light.
The drinks: They source only the top five percent of specialty arabica coffee beans from a variety of sustainable farms and institutions around the world—all have recorded cupping scores of 85 or higher by the Specialty Coffee Association. Star drinks go to their signature coffee, which consists of four latte selections (B200 hot; B220 cold) concocted from natural sugars sourced from different cities. We suggest trying the Manuka, made with raw New Zealand honey, or the Jawa, a latte macchiato served with Indonesian palm sugar, coconut and pandan. Even more satisfying is the frothy Agave that’s candied with natural Mexican agave nectar with a sprinkle of black pepper on top. For the purists who prefer a stronger brew, check out the Fairtrade Organic Honduras (B240), a smooth and flavorful pour over coffee with mild acidity.
The crowd: Deep-pocketed coffee connoisseurs.
Why you’d come back: Just one sip of the coffees here is enough to tell you that they rate much higher than your average espresso. With a variety of organic beans freshly roasted onsite, you’ll get a close-up view of the process, too.
