BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Cali-Mex Bar & Grill

Never-ending tortilla chips and beer taps on the tables

The buzz: Hong Kong-based food franchise Cali-Mex Bar & Grill has opened its first Bangkok branch with a menu that sees a Californian take on traditional Mexican dishes, with generous portions that are sure to hit the spot.

The decor: Set beneath Sukhumvit’s Holiday Inn, the restaurant takes on a diner-slash-sports-bar feel, with high stools and cozy booths. The space is compact but comfortable with a vibrancy that exudes from bright lighting and colorful paintings on red brick walls. Sit in the comfort of a booth or opt for a street-facing bar stool to watch the world go by.

The food: Don’t go filling up on the free tortilla chips that magically keep being replenished while you wait, as there’s plenty more to try here. You’ll want to save room for the cheesy quesadillas stuffed with juicy pulled pork (B299) and beef tacos (B399/three pieces) topped with a crazy amount of cheese. The real indulgence, though, is the El Mexicano, a big beef burger piled high with guacamole, spicy jalapenos and melted American cheese (B499).

The drinks: Each table comes with its own custom-made beer tap and you’re given two options, Singha (B0.26/ml) and Asahi (B0.30/ml), which works out pretty cheap by the liter when you do the maths: B260 for Singha and B300 for Asahi. If beer isn’t your thing, they’ve also got a selection of cocktails and mocktails on offer.

Why we’d come back: The big beer tap on the table makes it dangerously easy to while away the hours, chit chatting and snacking on free chips. It’s undeniably a good, casual spot to chill out and have a good time.
