The buzz: Housed in a striking contemporary building, The Subhashok Art Center champions contemporary local artists in continually rotating exhibitions.

The space: Tucked into the depths of Sukhumvit Soi 33, surrounded by graffiti, the gallery houses two vast floors of lofty exhibition space. The building is encased in bare cement, with a wedge of glass on the façade meant to represent a stone cut in half. 

The now: The opening exhibition combined some of the biggest names in Thai contemporary art: the grotesque caricatures of Lampu Kansanohm (see our interview), the politically charged nudes of Manit Sriwanichpoom (of Pink Man fame), the gender-bending societal satire of Michael Shaowanasai, the creepy surrealist self-portraits of Kittikun Mankit and the manga pop art of Kiatanan Iamchan. It’s such a high-flying roundup, it almost serves as an overview of Thai contemporary art.

The future: Mostly contemporary international and local artists, usually combined in one exhibition under a single theme.
