Whitespace Gallery

A minimalist space showcasing young, local artists.

The concept: Having packed up their digs at Lido in Siam Square, the gallery from David Mayer’s architecture and interior design company Whitespace (the masterminds behind the design of hip venues like Tribeca Restobar and Mellow) has reopened on the second floor of a building in Sala Daeng Soi 1. Curated by Maitree Siriboon, with occasional guest contributors, Whitespace aims to continue to be a platform for young emerging artists with more of an experimental, avant-garde leaning.

The décor: As the name suggests, the venue is little more than stark white walls and unfinished concrete floors. The raw setting allows for few distractions from the art, with the only real add-on being fluorescent lights, arranged in squares, that beam down from the ceiling.

The crowd: Not necessarily big-time collectors, but mostly expats and art students who appreciate contemporary arts.

In the future: They’re promising six exhibitions per year, with the next one by Pornpraseart Yamazaki who uses his own blood to paint pictures of banknotes, with guest curator Tang Fu Kuen from Singapore.

Now: A co-exhibition Soul Sciences from Prasert Yodkaew and Manit Kantasak that examines humans’ relationship with nature and questions technology, culture and time through an installation of tree parts and sketches of mythical creations. Also open Mon-Tue by appointment.
