AMP Burger & Bar
Tucked midway between Sanam Pao and Ari BTS stations, AMP Burger & Bar is a trendy little diner that comes pretty close to nailing the whole 50s American kitsch vibe and offers up a simple and satisfying burger menu to match. The neon sign and crate-like seats out front hint at the charming clutter within: a couple of retro dining booths, photos of Elvis and Jimmie Rodgers staring dreamily from the walls alongside three large pop art homages to HM the King and vintage Hot Wheels cars still in their packaging. Among the piles of well-pawed gun and motor mags, there’s even space for the by-now requisite upturned, rusty bicycle—though this one is a BMX not a fixie. There’s no jukebox to spark diners into a meal-time jive, but the guys behind the bar have an endearing fixation for all things 90s. Amp’s menu is fittingly limited, and pleasingly cheap, offering only a small selection of burgers and sides, plus a sturdy serving of battered fish and potato wedges with aioli (B160). The house special, the AMP Signature Burger (pork or beef, B175), comes positively dripping with cheddar cheese, tangy homemade BBQ sauce, sizzling bacon, romaine lettuce and a couple of battered shrimps on a soft, almost fluffy bun. The beef patty option is made from 100% rib eye steak, which is cooked to order. It’s all pretty sloppy but very, very comforting, even if the sauce may be too overpowering for some. Other burger options include your surf and turf, chicken, and cheese standards (starting from B130), each appealingly presented on wooden cutting boards. These can be complemented with onion rings or thick-cut wedges (B60 each), though, unfortunately sometimes served a little cold and oily. On the plus side, the wedges are at least nicely seasoned. A decent range of spirits, some seemingly ornamental, line the back wall, but we think you can’t go too wrong with a beer and burger combo, especially when both the bottles and glasses are served pleasingly icy to the touch. The old-time party shtick is perhaps not for everyone, but AMP’s certainly a worthy and refreshingly inexpensive pit stop for anyone bent on exploring Bangkok’s burgeoning burger trail. Corkage B200.
