The Oak Room
The buzz: The Oak Room is modeled after a vineyard sampling area—you grab an order sheet with columns for tasting notes as you enter—this laidback space debuted in Greenwood about six weeks ago.
The décor: Pretty basic with black wooden tables and a slate tasting counter. A few quirky elements personalize the space, including ceiling lamps made from repurposed wine bottles and a pair of New York-themed art pieces.
The food: Not much for now, although they do offer a cheese plate ($15). The plan’s to bring in guest chefs and allow delivery of grub from surrounding restaurants in time to come.
The drinks: Most wines—roughly two thirds—are served up in a range of portion sizes: tasting (from $4), glass (from $14) and bottle (from $42). Offerings run the gamut from fruity whites such as Embers Chardonnay 2010 by Margaret River vineyard Flametree (from $4.50) to French reds including a light-bodied 2009 Usseglio-Chateauneuf Du Pape (from $5) from Bordeaux.
The music: Soothing jazz and acoustic tunes.
The crowd: Local residents looking for a nightcap after dinner.
Why you’ll be back: For a relaxing and affordable drink at the area’s sole wine specialist.
