This week, the big question is, “Will there be violence?” Sorry, let’s try that again. The question is… WHEN WILL THE VIOLENCE ERUPT? Cue Fox News-style logos and journalists doing pieces to cameras in front of Bangkok’s totally hottest hot spot—the Gaza of Bangkok, the Tahir Square of Thailand, the Ratchaprasong of 2012—Thammasat University.Oh yeah. Hell hath no fury like an academic scorned. And this time, academics are pissed off on both sides of the Section 112 fence. BK’s own on-the-ground reporters have been witness to terrible scenes of violence. One professor was found lying in a pool of spittle, exhausted after hours of impassioned lecturing on the topic of constitutionality. “It was horrifying,” one tearful student told us. “When he got on to the topic of monarchies in 19th Century Europe, it was just… I had to leave the room.”UN watchdogs are being sent in as we speak, with one officer from the multinational peace-keeping force commenting, “We’ve been told it’s ugly down there. There’s been accusations of mass name calling and even people using the ‘Hitler’ argument, which is against the Godwin convention governing academic debate. A book may even have been snapped shut fairly loudly in the heat of the moment. We’re getting ready to see some really shocking stuff.”Embassies have issued advisories and are encouraging foreign nationals to avoid all unnecessary travel in the capital, particularly to libraries, universities and anywhere frequented by lecturers, such as pubs that play plearn chiwit or have happy hours starting at 3:30pm.As this article went to press, students were still engaged in running battles, with calls to more violence on both sides. “Don’t use knowledge for things that are not moral,” one horrifying billboard read.“Have people not watched Hotel Rwanda?” one Communication Arts student screamed. “Like, are these people Thai? I mean the Nitirat group, not Rwandans.” (The Nitirat group was not available for comment, as they were preparing incendiary rhetoric and sharpening their pencils.)Stay safe people. Change sidewalks if you see anyone in tweeds or wearing little round glasses. And God help us in this darkest hour.
