The buzz: First opened five years ago in a shophouse in the hectic neighborhood in Soi Sawasdee, Koi Art Gallery Bangkok has found a new home just across the street in a renovated house neighboring cake shop Mousses & Meringues. With their close connection to local universities’ art faculties, the gallery’s curators, founder Koi Wan-oon and Thanayut Chitpayap, continue to focus on emerging contemporary Thai artists. Also given the bigger space, we’re told there’ll soon be more activities at the venue.

The décor: After three months of renovations, the retro all-white house now sports a mural with portraits of Warhol, Dali and Picasso, which can be spotted from the street. The ground floor is decked out with modern and pop furniture, along with sculptures on the concrete floor and other artwork on its white walls. The main exhibition area, however, is located in the farthest rectangular room on the same floor. On the second floor, you can find a small library, a seating area and some more artworks, including several pieces from the upcoming exhibition.

The crowd: Roughly 90 percent of the visitors are foreigners and expats looking for works by fresh artists to add to their collections, or simply art to hang at home.

In the future: The gallery promises at least 12 exhibitions a year, each spanning about a month, with group exhibitions and international artists to be featured occasionally.

Now: The upcoming exhibition is I’ll Spread My Wings by Sudrak Khongpuang, whose bright paintings, depicting upcountry placidity through rice fields and streams, are a means for the artist to escape the urbanism of Bangkok. It will be on show from Aug 8-Sep 14.
