BANGKOK BAR

Bright Young Things

The carefree spirit of 1920s Europe lives on at this Sathorn hideaway

The buzz: The latest bar to join the fray in the Sathorn 10 and 12 neighborhood, BYT (short for “Bright Young Things”) pays tribute to the bohemian socialites who yolo-ed their way across Europe during the short-lived golden age between the end of World War I and the start of Prohibition in the US.

The decor: Lean into the faux bookcase outside to find a low-lit foyer that leads into a compact room decked out in turquoise and divided into two spaces. Grab a seat in the sofa room-slash-dance floor or head to the heart of the action: a black marble bar bathed in red neon from a sign that reads “Bright Young Things” and surrounded by heavy velvet swivel chairs. That centerpiece sign serves as a rallying cry for customers, a sweeping reminder that we are young and free and here to celebrate life.

The drinks: The mirrored back bar features a five-level shelf filled with bottles of everything from Jameson to genever. Using these, the bar team whips up signatures crafted by Vesper’s Supawit “Palm” Muttaratana. All these drinks are named after major European cities and highlight their native flavors. For instance, London (B370) is an easy-drinking, elderflower- and apple-infused G&T made with Bulldog gin and served in a very ‘grammable glass crafted in the shape of a bee, while Berlin (B400) is a refreshing mix of mint, apricot liqueur, a hint of brine and Riesling, Germany’s predominant wine. If you like bright and sour drinks, order Porto (B400), a riff on the New York Sour that features Wild Turkey bourbon, maraschino liqueur, angostura bitters, lemon, egg white and port wine.

The music: The soundtrack runs the gamut from early-twentieth-century jazz to present-day top 40 hits, depending on the night. Local DJs frequently drop in to keep the good vibes going until late.

Why we’d come back: Less pretentious than Sathorn’s other hideaway bars but no less dedicated to the art of making cocktails, BYT is a shot in the arm to a neighborhood that had gone quiet for some time.
