BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Attitude

Fashion food and booze with prime rooftop views.

Sitting high in the sky 26 stories above the river, this rooftop bar offers all the dazzling views you expect mixed with stiff drinks and delicious sharing plates. The tapas on offer here gives a nod to traditional Asian flavors and sweet treats. The cocktails, are a cut above, too, thanks to French mixologist Alexandre Hersent—who slings both classic and signature drinks with respectable finesse.

The buzz: Bangkok’s latest prime rooftop spot for dining and drinking sits 26 floors above the Chao Phraya at the new Avani hotel.

The decor: The bar-restaurant shares the top floor with a swimming pool, both of which maximize the river view and city scape. A big, well-stocked bar stands up front among outdoor tables, offering booze to both swimmers and diners. The open-plan kitchen to the right of the bar also offers a few counter seats. As for the dining room, it’s all flashy lighting and decor that sits between hotel fine-dining and a fun casual place. Those who just want a drink should grab one of the daybeds primed for river views.

The food: It's all very sharing- and booze-friendly, which translates to artfully presented tapas plates with the odd nod to Asian flavors. Lamb shoulder arrives in the form of lollipops (B340) and smoked duck lacquered in fish sauce with a tea-flavored gel (B220). For something less trying, look out for the premium produce from both land and sea, like tsarskaya oysters (B140/piece), beluga caviar (B18,000) served with crunchy clay potato, and Australian wagyu tomahawk (B4,950). Desserts go down a sculptural route. The “Xtra Virgin” (B260) sees a green apple made from blown apple syrup filled with apple mousse and served with apple sorbet and spiced apple on dehydrated-apple hay.

The drinks: French mixologist Alexandre Hersent rolls out refreshing signature cocktails like the Bora Bora Paradise Island (Absolut pear vodka, curacao, Joseph Cartron banana liqueur, apple juice and coconut ice cream, B380) and Moulin Rouge (Absolut raspberry, passion fruit juice, a touch of grenadine and prosecco (B380). If you’re more into wine, sommelier Cherdchai Tomkaew can help you to pick a good bottle from the list of almost 100, ranging from B1,150-63,460. Wine by the glass starts from B360.

Why you should care: The stunning view alone is worth the visit. Add in a nice vibe and some not-half-bad food and drink, and you’ve got a cool-season must-visit.
