SINGAPORE RESTAURANT

Super Loco (Customs House)

A casual-glam waterfront eatery by Singapore's beloved Mexican restaurant group.

The Loco Group brings a touch of Mexican fun to the strait-laced but picturesque Customs House, with water-facing decks and plenty of alfresco tables. There's exciting, slightly more upscale menu, with dishes like the de cangrejo taco ($14), with crispy softshell crab and pickled pineapple, and the ceviche ($16), a refreshing mix of red snapper, mint, avocado, serrano chilli, lime and purslane, served with toasted tortillas. Wash them down with their tequila-laced sparkling sangria, made with yuzu, apple, white peach and mint. The margarita list also has a few mezcal-based variations, like the Prickly Pear Mezcalita.

The buzz: The Loco Group, behind two of our favorite Mexican establishments—casual-glam Duxton Hill hangout Lucha Loco and family-friendly Robertson Quay brunch spot Super Loco—brings a touch of fun to the strait-laced but picturesque Customs House at Raffles Place.

The vibe: It's a great L-shaped space between Kinki and Long Tail, flanked with a water-facing deck on two sides, and with a pastel-and-metal color scheme reminiscent of the Robertson Quay branch. Expectedly, three-fourths of the tables are alfresco. Thanks to the super pretty interiors and romantic waterfront views, expect a Raffles Place-y crowd of tall, lean, beautiful, Oxford-shirted and well-heeled folk, though the CBD location does mean groups of office bros congregate at the high tables around the side.

The food: Super Loco Downtown serves an exciting, slightly more upscale menu, using nicer produce and more indigenous spices and herbs. Among the fish and carnitas tacos, for example, you'll find de cangrejo option ($14), with crispy softshell crab and pickled pineapple. Also on the seafood front is the ceviche ($16), a refreshing mix of red snapper, mint, avocado, serrano chilli, lime and purslane, served with toasted tortillas. Also try the huitlacoche tostada ($14), made with Mexican truffle aka corn fungus. The food is a bit undersalted for our booze-blitzed palates, but there is a nice kick to everything, and the use of herbs and lime lifts even earthy dishes like the huitlacoche.

The drinks: They've always done good, party-worthy drinks, and the trend continues here. Try their tequila-laced sparkling sangria, made with sangria, yuzu, apple, white peach and mint. The margarita list also has a few mezcal-based variations, like the Prickly Pear Mezcalita. At $18, it won't exactly throw you back in your chair, but it has plenty of that nice smoky, thick mezcal kick that'll have you ordering a second. Usuals aside, they also carry a couple Mexican craft beers from Day of the Dead ($16).

Why you'll be back: You love mezcalitas, are looking to date a Raffles Place suit or are already dating one or just love slightly upscale Mexican food without the Robertson Quay toddlers on scooters.
