BANGKOK RESTAURANT
The Dock
One of Bangkok’s biggest seafood players branches out to a Thonglor restaurant.
Along with a huge list of oysters charting such prestigious names as Tsarskaya, Gillardeau, Belon, and Fine De Claire, you will also find a whole list of other premium seafood at this elegant market style restaurant, from Australian Spencer Gulf King Prawns and New Zealand Ora King Salmon to Scottish Loch Duart Salmon, Alaskan King Crab and Galician Octopus. The restaurant itself is a nautical blend of dangling ropes, netting, and seafood held tantalizingly in two live tanks.
The buzz: This seafood place is not a completely new venture. Run by seafood distribution giant Thammachart Seafood, The Dock started off as counters in Emporium, Siam Paragon and Emquartier’s Gourmet Market, serving cooked seafood from the available fresh products. Now the group has taken a bigger move to open its first standalone restaurant.
The decor: Taking the front space of Thonglor’s Maze community mall, the restaurant is stylishly decked out in black and yellow in an effort to channel the spirit of sou’wester-wearing fishermen. The team from Whitespace (who also designed Tribeca, Sourced Grocers and Daily Roast) has filled it with other fishing-related elements like ropes and nets as well as informative illustrations of the regions where the seafood and wines come from. A bar sits in the middle of the space, adjacent to live seafood tanks showcasing 14 kinds of oyster as well as live lobsters and geoducks.
The food: Tasmanian oysters and French fine de claire oysters cost B99 each, before you get to Irish Gallagher (B289) and Japanese Akkeshi oysters (B299). Opt for an assorted plate of 12 for B1,795. Signature dishes from other branches include red king crab au gratin (baked red king crab with grated parmesan and cream, B1,999) and “Tsar of Ora King salmon a la minute” (baked and oak-smoked salmon fillet with basil sauce, B550), along with the restaurant’s own take on lobster linguine with tom yum sauce (B590) and spicy tuna tartare (B395) with mango, lemongrass and chili. Or you can select your own seafood from the list and have it weighed then grilled or steamed for you.
The drinks: The food menu suggests wines to pair with each dish. They start at B195 by the glass while cocktails are priced from B250.
Why you should care: Here, you get your fresh seafood straight from the distributor, meaning it gets to the restaurant sooner, and can be sold at a cheaper price.
