After a nice brunch or a comforting treat? The Girl and the Pig will satisfy your hunger in a mellow and homey ambience. You will love the menu here for its use of only local, seasonal produce. For a quick brunch, grab an eggs Benedict with crab cake, which bursts with fresh crab meat, while the organic poached eggs provide a nice clean flavor, complemented by the freshly baked muffin and tangy Hollandaise sauce. If you are hungry, do not hesitate to go for the fresh and substantial grilled Australian sirloin steak with chimichurri sauce. They also introduce new dishes monthly to keep everyone excited, while the desserts such as the delicious peach melba are the perfect, photogenic palate cleansers.

Aside from Paul and Eathai, another zone that shows some form of human life at Central Embassy is the fifth-floor dining area. That said, the crowd was pretty thin on our last visit to The Girl and the Pig, despite it being a Friday night.

The cutely named, faux-farmhouse-style venue does what they call New American bistro-style cuisine, with an emphasis on natural ingredients and rustic presentation. All the Western comfort dishes are covered, from cold cut platters and salads to pasta and burgers, as well as brunch favorites.

But the casual ambience is not reflected in the price tags. The sirloin eggs Benedict (B380 for single egg, B680 for double) is one of the priciest eggs Benedicts in town (there are also gravlax and crabcake versions at B280/420). Though they asked us what level of doneness we wanted our beef (medium), the meat still came out overcooked and so chewy that the well-poached egg and the nice spicy hollandaise couldn’t really help.

It was the same problem with our Tex-Mex BBQ salmon (B480); despite being ordered medium rare, the thick salmon fillet came out well-browned yet simply too dry. This was unfortunate because the bed of light and tangy grilled corn salad (with cubed beets, bell pepper, onion and green peas) was delicious. The pulled-pork burger (B320), too, comes in a fluffy brioche with some nice, crisp fries on the side, but we can’t get over the all-too-dry pork.

Apart from these somewhat flawed dishes, we love their harvest salad (B240), in which the crisp lettuce and candied walnuts complement the mellow grilled peach, zucchini and beetroots, resulting in a fun dish with many textures and flavors. The classic French clafoutis (pancake-like dessert, B260) also hits the spot, with the sweet batter balanced out by tangy berries and a rich vanilla ice cream.

While some dishes are undoubtedly good, there’s clearly a problem with service: main courses served before appetizers and some unwelcoming staff are not what we expect from a restaurant that charges so much. Corkage B300
