BANGKOK BAR

Theatre Bar

The buzz: The Sathorn bar scene has been on the up lately, and Theatre Bar is another unique case in point. Sitting on the 10/F of the newly opened Mode Sathorn Hotel, right next to BTS Surasak, the venue combines sweeping views and colorful pop decor. Its opening party a few months back caused quite a buzz, and now with monthly and special DJ nights lined up, the place has really got into its stride.

The décor: The elongated space is flanked by a bay window offering 10th-floor views of Sathorn. The decor itself serves up a colorful pop and 60s style vision of the future, with plenty of effect lighting. First thing you notice is the vivid floor with its flower-shaped backlights, which continually change color adding life to the leather sofas and low tables. Things get more theatrical with white mask-shaped sofas and eye-catching white fabric sphere lamps, which hang down from the ceiling and in fact serve as film screens. Vintage films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Funny Face are projected onto the spheres, so there’s a good chance you’ll be joined by the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Bette Davis. A DJ booth sits to one corner of the room behind another mask-like façade, near a smoking room and soundproof private rooms.

The crowd: Mostly foreigners, including a fair share of hotel guests on weekdays, while things get more vibrant on event nights and weekends.

The music: File under house and progressive, with resident DJs taking turns on different nights.

The menu: It’s all about the cocktails here. The headliner is the Blue Affair (Smirnoff green apple, blue curacao, lychee, green apple, pineapple and lime juice, B280) by bartender Sarawut Permnam, while the various types of mojitos (B260) are also popular. More fun can be had when you pick from the Stars’ Favorites list of cocktails (B280), which includes Jennifer Aniston’s Margarita, Johnny Depp’s Bourbon Sour and George Clooney’s Su Casa. The movie-named cocktails range the from Sex and the City (Metropolitan) to the Pretty Woman (Grand Marnier, cranberry juice, orange twist and sparkling wine), and set you back B280. As for bites, you can order amuse gueule (tapas) like the petit sandwich (spicy minced prawns, sliced chicken in oyster sauce, grilled spicy beef, ham cheese and grilled vegetables, B250) and Thai set (rock robster spring roll, lacy chicken net, crisp crab claw and Thai chicken puff, B180).

Why you’ll come back: Nice cocktails amid a stimulating theme, with a décor that’s sure to get you a lot of love on social media. It looks a decent spot for a private party, too.
