Pura Vida Lounge & Bar
A breezy, beachy rooftop bar where you can sit back and relax.
The buzz: The former rooftop craft beer bar, Fat Cow On The Roof, has been transformed into a breezy rooftop "beach" bar, serving comfort food alongside fresh, tasty cocktails.
The decor: Picture the last beach club you went to in Patong, but on a rooftop. Instead of a beach backdrop, the white wicker furniture and feather flags enjoy views of Bangkok’s twinkling high-rises. Apart from the furniture and a few decorations, the place hasn’t changed much from when it used to be Fat Cow On The Roof. Once the elevator opens on the eighth floor, you're faced with an open-air space with no tall buildings to block the view (a blessing of not being in central Bangkok), making this spot a good little escape from busy Bangkok life.
The drinks: We were pleasantly surprised at the signature cocktails, thanks to Sven Maywald, the bar manager at 1881 by Water Library who created the menu. Our favorite was the Tropical Punch (Havana Rum, coconut milk, lime juice, syrup, chai tea, Absinth and Angostura bitters, B330), which dangerously tastes just like the cha yen from your local coffee cart. A twist on your usual Mai Tai, the Mai Chai (Mekhong rum, chai tea, almond syrup, lime juice and pineapple juice, B320) is also very tasty, but there’s nothing better than sipping on the refreshing Vodka Lemongrass Sour (vodka, lemongrass, lime juice, syrup and egg white, B320) while watching the sunset.
The food: Familiar comfort dishes like the fillet steak with fries (B580) feature alongside the likes of the Pura Vida burger (B330), which comes with bacon, egg and their signature spicy sauce.
The music: Tropical house mixed with something a little different on Thursdays, when they hold a salsa class for beginners from 7-9pm (B300).
The crowd: Beer lovers still pop by to get their dose of craft beer, mixed with people who work around the area looking for a place to wind down after office hours.
Why we’d come back: Gone are the days when rooftop bars have to be fancy and hi-so, this place gives an alternative option.
