BANGKOK BAR

Myst

The buzz: Set atop Grass Thonglor, Myst, is the latest bar to hop on the molecular mixology train. Billing itself as a place for young partygoers seeking an extra edge for their night, Myst brings a certain playfulness to its drinks list, with spectacular presentation coming in the form of fire, nitrogen smoke and scientific-looking glasses in attention-grabbing sizes. While it’s still in its soft opening period, this new spot has already made quite a stir via its Instagram videos, while its experienced bartenders, who have worked at places like Zuma and Lebua, ensure drinks please not only the eyes but the tastebuds, too.

The décor: Inside, there’s a small stage with a backdrop provided by small wooden logs and eye-catching neon signage. Under vivid pinkish lighting, groups gather at low wooden tables surrounded by Louis-IV-style chairs. The outdoor area, on the other hand, has a more intimate feel with low tables and sofas accompanied by a reasonable share of tall bar tables. Though the view is not particularly dramatic, given it’s only the fourth floor, the balcony still makes for a nice place to escape Thonglor’s din below. The marble bar, a stage for cocktail-making wizardry, is also set to be lengthened to extend into the outdoor area.

The crowd: Young and fun-loving Thais who mostly gather in groups for friendly banter, business talks and to admire the spectacular cocktail performances.

The music: Live bands and DJ sets every night. Expect everything from easy-listening to disco funk. The early hours carry a more laidback vibe while bigger beats arrive late at night, especially on Friday to Sunday.

The price: Groups may opt for the sangria bowl served with strawberry jello (vodka) in syringes—fun-looking but potent—or the Creamy Smoke Bomb (Baileys Irish Cream with beer plus smoke), which come in at B180. For an even more flamboyant showdown of liquid nitrogen and flames, try Myst’s signature shots such as Sperm (Sambuca and Baileys Irish Cream, B180), Quick Fuck (Midori, Baileys Irish Cream and Svedka Vodka, B180), or the flaming Lamborghini (Blue Curacao, Sambuca, Baileys Irish Cream, Kahlau and Fireball, B300). Fruit-based cocktails include Crazy Scientist (Svedka Vodka, honey, Italian sweet basil, pineapple puree, citrus and passion fruit, B350). For a more direct approach, there’s also Absinthe (B400 per shot). If you want to draw things out, though, house-blended flavors of shisha are also available at B400 for two hours. The food menu will grow by the time of its official opening, but for now the Mexican fried chicken (B180) and Calamari with Italian dip (B180) are fine compliments to the cocktail fun.

Why you’ll come back: Myst’s out-there cocktail presentation makes for plenty of fun, especially if you come in a group. The venue itself carries a laidback but still somewhat sophisticated vibe, perfect for photo opps.
