BANGKOK BAR
Mitr Bar
Mitr Bar takes local craft beer to new heights.
The buzz: Victory Monument’s Mitr Bar spotlights local craft beers fresh from Nonthaburi’s Mitr Craft project, where six big players in the Thai brewing scene—Chit Beer, Devanom, Wizard Beer, Red Stone, Lazy Fat Cat and Mickleheim—have joined forces.
The decor: Only a minute’s walk from BTS Victory Monument, the building will be familiar to fans of Skytrain Jazz Bar. Look up and you’ll notice the yellow-lighting from the street. Follow the mysterious, graffiti-filled stairwell up to the third floor, where you'll find a glass door inviting you to come in. Inside, the boxy, container-like feel of the room is offset by a wall of clear glass, which prevents the space from feeling claustrophobic and provides a perfect people watching opportunity. If you’re feeling antisocial, grab the one-seater table that faces outwards and just enjoy the view of the BTS running by.
The drinks: In a very democratic move, Mitr Craft calls on aspiring brewers to register their profile on www.mitrcraft.com and pitch their projects to enter production and be sold at this outlet. Twelve out of 20 taps are from the Mitr Craft brewery, whether it's the founders’ own beers, like Chit Beer Summer Fresh Pale Ale (B160/B240), or one from the collective project (where the public can vote for their favorites via the website), which will be available from mid-September onwards. Tap numbers 19 and 20 are reserved for alternative stuff like Devanom Nonthaburi Sparkling Mead (B190/B280), while the rest will host interesting international imports, like Heretic Make America Juicy Again New England IPA (B210/B310). Eat before you visit, because only simple bar snacks like fries (B89) and onion rings (B89) are available.
The music: Live acoustic music on Friday and Saturday 7:30-9:30pm.
The crowd: Beer fans who take their craft brews seriously, mixed with a scattering of those who just want to give Thai craft beer a go.
Why we'd come back: The team has created a system whereby new beer is delivered from the brewery every Thursday (you can subscribe on the Untappd app for real time updates of what’s currently on the taps), which means that occasionally on Wednesdays, if there’s beer left over, it will be sold at a bargain price of B100 per glass.
