A tucked-away, open-air wine bar.
The buzz: After Bellino Wine Room and Boutique on Thonglor Soi 13 closed, one of the owners, Jay Boccia, went solo and found a new home for his new wine bar named after himself.
The decor: There is a chance that you would accidentally walk pass it on your first visit, it’s located just below La Bottega di Lucas but these two spots have completely different vibes. While La Bottega is more fine dining, Chez Jay is more chilled. Blended in nicely with the outdoor trees with minimal lightings, the small bar counter is placed right in the middle of 49 Terrace. There is a small kitchen at the back with one dining table squeezed inside, on top of that you have plenty of choices to sit outside on their wooden furniture with sofas and stools placed here and there.
The food: Small tapas dishes to go with your wine. Kitchen opens until the closing time. The owner has his burrata flown in from Italy every Friday, served with fresh local produced tomatoes, B400. Our highly recommended dish would have to be the marinated anchovies (B200), those who usually find anchovies too flavorful would love this dish. They are marinated nicely and balanced with a squeeze of lemon on top, perfect. The bar also supply the bread from Conkey’s and it goes very well with local produced pork Terrine & Duck liver mousse (B325).
The drinks: The wine menu changes every two weeks. We tried the Italian Lucareli Puglia IGT (Negroamaro) 2012 (B275/glass; B1,375/bottle) and loved it. Full bodied and robust. For white wine lovers, grab a glass (B200) of Moute (Chenin Blanc) 2015 from California or only B800 for a whole bottle! Every Thu-Sat, enjoy an all-night promotion of a glass of prosecco with three French oysters for B500 or a whole bottle and six oyster for B1,500.
The crowd: A mix of dressed up pre-drinkers who are ready for their crazy night await and also a bunch of shorts and flip-flops wearers who are just here to chill.
Why we would come back: The anchovies good, cheap wines and easy-going atmosphere are good enough for us.
