BANGKOK BAR
The Cavern Club
A proper back-to-basics rock club.
The buzz: Originally opened on the second floor of The Walk community mall in Kaset-Nawamintra at the end of last year, The Cavern Club closed down after just a few months seeking a homier location. It’s now reopened as a proper standalone bar and restaurant, right by another live music institution, Parking Toys, and promises daily live music with a particular focus on 60s-90s classic rock.
The décor: The bar’s exterior is a combination of rock and wood, with a huge “Cavern Club” sign front and center. It’s a classic formula—just think The Rock Pub or Hard Rock Café. Inside is a pretty typical restaurant setting, glammed up with framed pictures of The Beatles and the owner’s personal collection of retro memorabilia. The stage sits to one side of the room illuminated by red, blue and green lights.
The music: Live bands perform under a different theme daily from 8:30pm-12:30am. Flash band (who you might know as the resident band at Ekkamai’s Wine Bibber Sangria) perform Motown tracks on Monday, while The Radio play country music on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The highlight of the week is arguably Wednesday when Isn’t band, who used to count Asanee and Wasan Chotikul as members, perform classic rock covers, from Eagles through to Eric Clapton. Friday is more varied and occasionally features the Elvis Thailand Show, while Saturday sees The Beatles Bangkok pay tribute to the Fab Four.
The crowd: Cool dads reliving their childhood music plus young music lovers.
The food and drinks: Whereas the old venue only offered up beer snacks, the new incarnation delivers a full menu adapted from the owner’s restaurant, Crystal Café at CDC. The food covers all the usual Italian, American and Thai suspects, like Hawaiian pizza (B295), black ink spaghetti kee mao with seafood (B225), cheese burgers (B295), T-bone steak (B330) and grilled beef with jaew sauce (B330). As for booze, beer is the main focus, namely of Paulaner Munchen (B220/250), Guinness (B220/250) and Heineken (B190/220). There’s also The Cavern Premium Beer (B220/250), a specially-made lager by Heineken that packs quite a punch. Cocktails keeps things classic with Long Island, Tequila Sunrise and Black Russian (B195).
Why you’ll come back: A number of live music venues have closed down recently, but this back-to-basics bar ought to appeal to young and old rockers alike.
