BANGKOK BAR

Casa Blue

Sathorn's welcoming craft beer bar will have you hooked.

The buzz: Easily spotted for its bright blue walls and retro floor tiles, this family-owned restaurant and bar serves a rotating roster of craft beers from both international big names and local favorites. Add in tasty comfort food and this newly relocated drinking den (formerly Blue Bar, a tiny, three-year-old Nanglinchee institution) is fast becoming a local hot spot.

The decor: The owners' collection of movie posters, international license plates and favorite quote plaques line the walls to give the spot a retro diner vibe. The blue color scheme and vintage-style couches and black barstools take you back in time. There's also open-air seating for those yearning for some nighttime breeze.

The food: Pick local or go international—from Thai cuisine to German, European or American eats, you can’t go wrong. Kick off your meal with baked clams soaked with garlic butter and white wine sauce (B159) paired with crispy bread chips. Next, fill your stomach with the perfectly rare Australian marbled steak (B389) or the barbecue pork ribs (B259)—Thai herbs lend a distinctly different taste to US barbecue, while fall-off-the-bone meat means you don’t even have to get that messy. If all that's not meaty enough, opt for the Bavarian Platter (B879): German sausages, pork knuckle, two scoops of mashed potato and sauerkraut that's to die for.

The drinks: With a total of 11 taps, you can work your way through American, German, Belgian and Polish craft brews—many of which are IPAs. The tap offerings differ week to week, with only three permanent fixtures, including the popular Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA (B259) that has a creamy taste and a sweet finish. Into American beers? Try the Rogue Batsquatch IPA (B289). This hazy IPA is good for those who want to a lighter, sweeter and even creamier beer. If you want to take a step back from an IPA, Casa Blue offers Allemand Pilsner (B169), a crisp beer brewed in Cambodia.

The music: Loosen up with some background house or jazz tunes—depending on the time of day and mood of the bar. Come March, Casa Blue plans to add live music to the roster.

The crowd: Laid-back businessmen and women in their 30s or 40s who want to unwind with a few beers, as well as a quiet younger crowd. Though the crowd is mostly Thai, there are a handful of foreigners who hang out here too.

Why we’d come back: “Casa”, it's in the name—this place really does feel like home and the restaurant owners sure treat you like family, even if it’s your first time stopping by. Combine the welcoming environment with their excellent hand-picked beer selection, and we'll happily get carried away ordering glass after glass. Clara Howell
