BANGKOK BAR

Big-a-Byte

The buzz: A relative newcomer in the neighborhood, Sivatel Hotel offers not only luxury accommodation, but also some colorful F&B outlets that are a welcome addition to the nightlife scene around otherwise stuffy Phloenchit. Capitalizing on the resurgence of the beer trend, Big-a-Byte, on the ground floor, looks set to be a hit among beer lovers and sports fans.

The décor: Sort of like a futuristic English pub, the space-age modern furnishings are offset by a big projector screen in the middle of the room. You can also get an opera chair with a personal screen (if you’re a lonely football drunk). There are also, of course, a few proper sit-down tables for those who want to do dinner along with their game.

The music: Generic pop hits through the ages, from Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” to Lady Gaga’s “Judas”—not really sports fan music, but oh well. Luckily, they also have live bands from Funky Villa and The Roof by Muse Thong Lo playing every Thu 7-9pm and Fri 9-11pm.

The crowd: An after work crowd from Chitlom, Phloen Chit, and oddly enough, the neighboring Swiss embassy.

The price: Classic cocktails B280. Beer cocktails B180-200. Thai beer B160 (by the bottle) and a good choice of Imported beers B190-380 like Leffe, Waterloo and St. Louis Premium (by the bottle). Draught beer B190/pint and B950/tower. Only Heineken is served on tap, though, but expect to get Guinness and Hoegaarden soon.

Why you’ll come back: Well, if you are a sport fans, the bar offers plenty of screens but, dear smokers, there are only indoor seats, so that might be a turn-off. Also, the daily buy-one-get-one-free happy hour runs from 6-8pm. Vasachol Quadri
