“I was not drunk … It’s a normal thing for a man to drink liquor, and I see nothing wrong with that.”—Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, thinker, politician, liberator of the enslaved masses.Thank you, Khun Chalerm! Finally, an MP ready to stand up for us men. We’ve borne silent witnesses to the slow erosion of manliness in Thailand as of late—pastel colors in menswear, a female prime minister, Film Rattapoom’s comeback... But now that we know Chalerm’s got our back, the last few remaining red-blooded guys at BK Magazine feel empowered to stand up for our God-given rights. Our first move was to get Prawit (he’s a he) from production to peek into our CEO’s office (she’s a she) and go, “Ha!” Oh yeah, from the surprised look on her face, or maybe it was mild annoyance, we could tell she knew the tables had turned now that Chalermachismo is in da house. Men are no longer going to hide the fact that we occasionally knock back a couple of shots before heading into a stressful meeting. And that when we need to be carried out, with a damp patch in our pants, well that’s just a sign that we’re clearly overworked.Men have been bullied for too long in Thailand. For one, they are regularly asked to take off their shirts in the media, turning us into sex objects, forcing us to waste time at the gym that could be spent watching football, and limiting the amount we can drink at Mellow on Saturday nights. Well that’s over. Screw six packs and screw diet tonic water. Next time one of our girlfriends asks, “Have you been putting on weight? Maybe you shouldn’t drink quite so much.” We’ll just slap them down with a little Chalerm the Man. Something like, “Thai men drink, OK? It’s the only thing we’re really good at. Do you women always have to be the best at everything?”So come on guys, show your solidarity with our Deputy PM. Yes, even if you vote Democrat. It wasn’t Abhisit who slammed Chalerm for enjoying a tipple before a stressful house session, but a female MP, right? That’s because even Abhisit is on Chalerm’s side on this one. Partying goes beyond party lines. Together, let us unite in raising a glass to the inalienable right for real men to be completely plastered at work.
