It’s the middle of February and love is in the air. So, too, is the Marine Corps’ MV-22B Osprey, “the world’s first production tilt-rotor aircraft, combining the best capabilities of a helicopter with the range, airspeed and payload of fixed-wing airplanes"!

While it could be coincidence that Valentine’s Day (Feb 14, recurring) is happening at exactly the same time as the latest instalment of the Singapore Air Show (on now through Feb 17), throw Total Defence Day (Feb 15) into the mix and something is surely up. That’s right, people, the Complete and Total Militarization of Love is nigh!

Hats off to the Government on this one—it’s the perfect tonic for our abject romantic hopelessness. Let’s face it: We wear slippers to the fanciest restaurants; we spend more time looking into our iPhones than our lovers’ eyes; our birth rate would embarrass a giant panda. And, in hindsight, the clues were there all along. Some recent themes for TDD? Will You Stand With Me?, I Will, and Keeping It Together. This year’s theme (unconfirmed at press time): Can We Share the Same Dessert Spoon?

And while the theory of Total Defence (essentially being prepared for an aggressor targeting your economic systems, social fabric, beliefs and commitments; also known as “most marriages”) might seem a little heavy-handed for people out looking for prospective partners, if the last 49 years have shown us anything it’s that a depressing lack of action in the field is no excuse for not being operationally ready at all times.

So all you singles out there? It’s time to man up and do your country proud. To fight to the bitter end for what you believe in—even if it’s just that you really, really think the guy should always pay on the first date.
