Thai Art Archives
The concept: The Thai Art Archives is the ambitious brainchild of Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship/curator/writer Gregory Galligan. He has teamed up with Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, James H. W. Thompson Foundation and Rama IX Art Museum Foundation to create Thailand’s first collaborative, collections-based archive of Thai modern and contemporary art in this space donated by the BACC.
The décor: Sitting on the BACC’s fourth floor next to galleries like Tadu and Numthong and boutique shops and cafés, the Thai Art Archives is set in a small glass-fronted room with a recessed wall down one side. The shelves are filled with art books and folios while the other half of the space is reserved for future exhibitions.
The crowd: Students, art lovers and the occasional lost tourist looking for MBK.
In the present: They’re currently working on the Montien Boonma Project, which aims to pay tribute to the life and masterpieces of the late artist.
In the future: Look out for a panel discussion with Australian art historian John Clark in collaboration with Reading Room (2 Silom Soi 19, 02-635-3674. www.readingroombkk.org) in early December.
