Modern Gallery

The concept: The latest addition to the Charoenkrung art neighborhood is the Modern Gallery at OP Garden. It’s a project by art collector Ritt Slipsophon, who has been active on the scene for over 20 years and previously ran 44 Arts Gallery. Here, the focus is on showcasing contemporary works by prominent Thai artists like Thawan Duchanee, Chalermchai Kositpipat and Angkarn Kalayanapong, as well as promoting emerging artists of the likes of Lolay, Cherdwood Sakolaya and Thanakorn.

The décor: Situated right near the front of OP Garden, art pieces can be seen through the gallery’s glass facade. Two sides of the room are white walls where paintings are hung, with a set of small spotlights projected onto them from the ceiling.

In the future: They’re planning at least four exhibitions a year, interspersed with showcases from private collections. They’ve hinted the next exhibition will involve a few emerging Thai artists, with contemporary visual artist Vasan Sitthiket likely to be in the mix.

Now: Growing-Up by Montree Mungkun, who was awarded for his Contribution to Thai Art and Culture by the Ministry of Culture in 2011. The exhibition includes his human-in-womb sculpture and vivid color paintings that explore his stages of growth. Through Jan 15.
