Art in Effect

The concept: Following the relocation of Whitespace Gallery, Sala Daeng welcomes another art space. Sat down the quiet sub-soi of Sala Daeng Soi 1, Art in Effect is the brainchild of Gregory Williams, an interior designer who previously lived in Myanmar. The focus, then, is largely on artworks from the region, showcased in a casual atmosphere.

The décor: With its Café on 6 on the first floor and un-gallery-like design, this new art spot feels more like stepping into the house of an arty friend. The third floor, where the works are mainly exhibited, is broken up into small rooms, filled with plenty of sofas and stools for relaxing on. The venue itself is very adaptable, too; for example, as part of the current exhibition, some of the gallery’s walls have been torn down to symbolize how Burma is starting to welcome the world’s attention. Little ornaments like small umbrellas hanging down from the ceiling, Buddha images and an antique harp also add to the Asian feel.

The crowd: Laidback art lovers, the majority being expats who are visiting either for the exhibitions or just to spend some time in the café.

In the future: The schedule is not yet fixed, but we’re told it will continue to lean towards Southeast Asian art, with possibly a greater focus on photography and Thai artists, too.

Now: The gallery’s debut exhibition, Deconstructing Burma, is a collection of paintings by six Myanmar-based artists, Tun T Lin, Khine Min So, Maung Myant Aung, K Kyaw, Min Yang Naung, and Zwe Yan Naing, which reflect the living conditions of their country under military rule.
