Located on the highway before entering Chiang Mai city center, Suan Paak Hug Khun (San Kumpaeng, Chiang Mai, 090-320-1233) is a new family-friendly restaurant.

The name translates to "veggie garden loves you," while the menu centers on traditional Thai and Lanna items, as well as a big section dedicated to Western dishes. Highlights include the salmon wrapped in savory leaf (miang khum pla salmon) and H’orderves Chiang Mai (a platter of Chiang Mai delicacies).

The owners previously ran two long-standing Thai restaurants on the Gold Coast in Australia.

The grounds of Suan Paak Hug Khun also features massive vegetable and botanical gardens (think pumpkin gardens, Coro Field-style), where the restaurant sources all its vegetables, grown using an aquaponics system aiming for long-term sustainability. There’s also a children’s play zone and live folk music on weekends.

Nearby, you'll also spot old Thai Airways plane parts, which belong to the landlord, who hopes to turn the area into major tourist attraction. So far it seems to be working—with photos already filling Instagram feeds (see below).
