Honestly, we wrote off the anual elephant polo tournament hosted by hospitality group Anantara (www.anantara.com) as a silly showcase exclusively for hi-sos. But recently we had the chance to visit Anantara’s elephant camp in Chiang Rai, where 25 rescued elephants are indeed well taken care of, and learned that stray elephants are actually a significant problem. As a result, we’re now right behind the event. This year, the tournament returns to the Anantara Hua Hin Resort for its twelfth year from Aug 28-Sep 1 at Phra Sri Suroyothai Military Camp. Entry is free but if you want the VIP treatment, there are special tailored packages starting from B9,000, which include an overnight stay with breakfast, roundtrip transfers to the polo pitch, lunch, a mini spa treatment pitchside and a special edition polo shirt. These rates are available for stays during tournament dates only. More information at www.anantaraelephantpolo.com
