Hands and Heart

This coffee shop keeps things minimal and monotone with black-and-white decor inspired by Teshima Art Museum, in Japan's Kagawa prefecture. Hands and Heart is all about hand-brewed coffee (Aeropress, pour-over and Chemex), which they say is made only from seasonal AA-grade single origin beans. In keeping with the decor, they serve their black coffee (Colombia, Kenya, Thailand) in a white cup, and their white coffee (from partner cafe Roots) in a black cup. You can also order homemade pastries such as charcoal croissant and cheesecake brownie.

Cutboy Knife

Sitting just next to Hands and Heart, this new knife showroom is a must-visit for any budding chef. The brand is the brainchild of Akarapong Cheewaphanyaroj, a former chef who is knowledgeable and can guide you through more than 50 different knives—all Japanese and handmade. Akarapong will help you select the right the right blade to meet your slicing and dixing needs. Accessories and maintenance services are also available in-store.

The Street Food Stalls

Soi 38 might look comparatively empty from the BTS Skywalk, but that doesn’t mean all the good cheap eats have disappeared. Head down to street-level and you’ll find a cluster of stalls tucked in the little courtyard of Sutti Mansion apartment complex. Mooping, pad Thai, khao mun gai—they are still there. Miss the congee? Continue down the soi then make a right turn on the connecting alley between Soi 38 and 36. Here, you’ll find the silky pork congee of Joke Moo (Jao Gao Thonglor).

Schnitzel’s

As the name suggests, this is the place to head for full-flavored comfort food. But there’s more to this brick house than the namesake good ol’ deep-fried cutlets. They also offer munchies like bacon cheese burger, pork chop and eggs, and PBBBJ (peanut butter, banana and jelly stuffed in a baguette). Too rich? Order some of the bruschetta or a salad instead.

Toby's

The ever-popular brunch spot now also offers some of its star breakfast dishes after sundown. If you’re looking for an Australian-style bite to go with the sun-drenched setting, opt for the likes of avocado toast, corn fritters and the IG-famous extra-crispy French toast. While you can expect a wait for tables during the day, especially on weekends, dinner is a more laid-back affair. The dinner-only dishes (from 6pm onwards) are equally fun and even more filling—try the pan seared Chilean seabass served with potato and onion puree and moscato glaze, crispy polenta with mushroom, wild rocket, blue cheese sauce and grated parmersan, and the crispy-skin brick-pressed chicken with deep-flavored hot sauce made from four kinds of chilies.
