The Space Bangkok will hold a special screening of the local music documentary Y/Our Music, co-directed by Art Every and David Reeve. Following the lives of nine non-mainstream Thai musicians, the film uses the country’s various styles of music as a metaphor for the divide between Thailand’s urban and rural lifestyles. Free Isaan-style snacks will be served and the Isan Khaen Band will perform live. The screening will take place on Nov 8, 7pm, at The Space Bangkok, Khlong San Plaza. Tickets are B250.

Alliance Française: Verdun, visions d’histoire Cinema/Concert

Alliance Française will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I with a special screening event on Thursday, Nov 13. Léon Poirier’s black-and-white film Verdun, visions d’histoire (1928), translated to Verdun, Visions of History, chronicles the nine-month Battle of Verdun, which claimed more than 200,000 lives. The silent film will be presented alongside a performance by famed pianist Hakim Bentchouala-Golobitch, who has composed and recorded music for over 30 silent French films and will recite songs by French composer Andre Petiot. The event begins at 7:30pm at the Auditorium of Alliance Française Bangkok (179 Wireless Road). B300 for students and members, B450 for non-members.

Goethe Institut: Science Film Festival 2014

Goethe Institut will hold its annual Science Film Festival from Nov 14-Dec 14, showcasing 26 educational films on topics as diverse as robots and windmills from around the world, all under the theme of “Future Technologies.” There will also be a variety of different educational games for children, each tied to a specific film. While a lot of the films are aimed at younger audiences, the festival still promises much for those interested in learning more about science and technology.

Frank Yang – An Evening of Digital Madness!

The Friese-Greene Club will host a special screening event of films made by Frank Yang, a young Taiwanese bodybuilder, violinist and filmmaker who’s gained fame for his controversial and shocking works, such as the hotly debated Street Love video, a short film in which Yang himself appears to make love to a young woman on the street. The event will feature a discussion with the outspoken filmmaker on the topic of internet films, a quickly growing industry the world over. Sneak Preview of “The Shadow Sea”

Another special screening from The Friese-Greene Club, The Shadow Sea is an action-thriller by director Richard Chambers following a foreign man who braves Thailand’s underworld to investigate the disappearance of his lover. Finding Vivian Maier

Here’s one causing a stir online. SF World Cinema will this month screen the documentary tracing the mysterious life of photographer Vivian Maier. Now considered one of the 20th century’s greatest street photographers, Maier worked as a nanny from the 1950s, snapping hundreds of thousands of remarkable photographs that she hid away in boxes, rarely to be seen by anyone else. After discovering her photos in a thrift auction in California in 2007, director John Maloof became determined to uncover the details of Maier’s life and why she chose to hide her gifts from the world. Special screening on Nov 30, with regular screenings Dec 5-7.
